Edit Did You Know? Trivia The scene where the shooting is taking place outside the bar was in fact a real bar from the 's through the early 90's.

And the whole production looks like a TV movie. Speaking of movies, the movie-within-a-movie thing is referred to only in passing.

Except for some set trailers, we see nothing of what would be the biggest deal in the parish ever.

With Hollywood stars and Mafiosi and all. Peter Sarsgaard really hung around to finish this unseen movie even after his long-time companion Kelly Macdonald gets killed?

Sarsgaard is pretty blah as the drunk movie star. Todd M. Top Contributor: Cooking. A decent plot, some good acting and some good location filming all added up to a much better than expected suspense movie with a little ghost story in there to help it out.

Everyone speaks with a Cajun drawl so checking the Closed Captions was rather frequent. Nothing special or outstanding in this one but it was entertaining and it flowed along nicely.

See all reviews from the United States. Top international reviews. Don't get me wrong, I can happily take a film without subtitles but the dialogue has to stay within certain parameters so that I can follow the plot.

Based on a novel by James Lee Burke, a series of detective and mystery stories that began in and continue to this day, this translation wouldn't have encouraged a further film of the series in my view.

However the novels come highly recommended and would certainly entertain a reader of high quality mystery thrillers. Go seek and read. Tommy Lee Jones is perfectly cast as the sheriff and hero of the franchise, Dave Robicheaux, with his Louisiana drawl, but herein is the problem as several actors cast their dialogue in a similar accent and much of it came over as mumbled, as noted by several reviewers.

Would've loved to follow the intricacies of the mystery and the route of Robicheaux's tracking of the crime. Loss of enjoyment, couple of stars dropped.

And I feel cheated because of the lack of subtitles. Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again.

In this drama, Detective Dave Robicheaux Tommy Lee Jones is investigating the murder of a young woman and also goes to investigate reports of a decayed corpse that had disappeared into the bog.

The single disc plays 5 trailers before offering play, scene selection, audio options [2. There is plenty of swearing, especially when John Goodman is on screen, some adventure violence, some racial comments and despite many mentions of prostitutes, only one short instance of topless nudity but no sex.

The ending seems a little anti-climax but the final comment of the daughter makes sense if you look at the photograph.

This movie needs subtitles. I had a hard time hearing the mumbled words at times. Well Boring is an understatement. But really boring is what we thought, no subtitles didn't help either could not make head or tail of what Tommy Lee Jones was saying.

Not our best Friday night movie choice, give it a miss or fall asleep you have been warned lol. One person found this helpful.

Very disapointed with this!! Sorry but i cant recommend this, one for the charity shop i think. Load more international reviews.

This is for the french blue ray of the minute film. Not the UK cut version. Very atmospheric down there in the Deep South and that was partly what made the film enjoyable.

That and the superb Tommy Lee of course. However I'm not convinced that the novel was successfully adapted for the movie. The story seemed disjointed in places, perhaps because a book can elaborate better than a screenplay can.

I'd still recommend anyone to go watch the film. Great product and great seller to deal with. Makes watching paint dry interesting, I tried my best to watch it but it ruined my Saturday night.

A crime thriller with a difference. It captures the atmosphere of the deep south. Tommy lee Jones is great with great supporting cast.

A little slow paced but still a very good film. A ghost story? An interesting film. It's perhaps of more interest for its showing of modern day Southwest Louisiana life than as a coherent detective mystery: one may end up asking one's self what it was all about - but it's still fun if offered at a good price.

Balboni denies knowing the prostitute whose murder is being investigated. With little to go on, Dave visits the film site and meets the producer Michael Goldman John Sayles who states that while Baby Feet is helping to fund the film, he is not a co-producer as he had said.

Meanwhile, Dave's home life is disrupted by Elrod and Kelly, who begin turning up regularly, almost every time with Elrod being drunk.

This prompts Dave to take pity on him as he, too, is a struggling alcoholic. The discovery of a second body prompts the FBI to become involved in the case.

Dave is partnered with agent Rosie Gomez Justina Machado. Dave attends a birthday party for Goldman and, though drinking Dr Pepper , becomes terribly uncoordinated during his drive home and crashes his pickup truck, sending him off in a daze to the forest.

There he encounters a camp of Confederate soldiers, and their commanding officer General John Bell Hood Levon Helm who apparently wishes to help Dave with his journey to solve these murders.

When he awakens from his daze in a hospital, Dave learns from Gomez that his drink had been laced with LSD. Elrod drunkenly takes a boat out on the Bayou with Kelly, calling Dave when the boat engines get caught in gill nets.

Dave gives Kelly his coat, as it is pouring rain, and a mysterious gunman shoots her in the chest, mistaking her for him.

General Hood offers advice again and Dave shakes off the feelings of guilt over Kelly's death. Elrod moves in for a while so Dave can be his AA sponsor.

On the last occasion that Dave sees General Hood, the general and a few of his Confederate comrades are breaking camp and preparing to leave.

They are having a group photograph taken and the general invites Dave to join them in the group. A story from an alleged pimp corroborates a suspect, Murphy Doucet Bernard Hocke who, with his partner Twinkie Lemoyne Ned Beatty , are responsible for the death of DeWitt Prejean, the skeleton found in the swamp.

Dave arrests Doucet using a planted knife as evidence, but Doucet gets out on bail and kidnaps Dave's young daughter Alafair.

Gomez and Dave go to Baby Feet's residence and force him into telling them about a campsite Doucet owns. The pair head there.

He's one of the best authors around of southern fiction. Please watch this to the end, its really great. I wonder if anyone noticed when they saw this?

Just me? Someone wanted to tell this story well. They assembled what should have been a great cast to tell a haunting story of murder, revenge and redemption.

Unfortunately what they ended up with was a Fantasy Island episode shot in the bayou. Perhaps something profound was lost in the editing process or perhaps Bertrand Tavernier should stick to making films in French.

I really can't put my finger on who ruined this movie perhaps it was a group effort but one thing is certain, they succeeded. I'm always fascinated watching Tommy Lee Jones.

His matter-of-fact manner, his slow drawl, his never-speak-a-word-that-need-not-be-said stoicism works particularly well in this film.

There is a really well known veteran cast here and the crime mystery is compelling. Well done and entertaining film. Of course, Jones upgrades everything he's in.

You get immersed in the deep South, with its murky history that has tendrils laced through the present. The story is a bit disjointed, but it pulls together in the end.

It doesn't feel like that was by design, though, which is the primary reason for one star off.

Overall, though, this is a success. Very good acting, immersive cinematography, and a story that ultimately works. And, frankly, Jones could pull off a movie consisting of nothing more than a few guys shoveling dirt from one pile to another, as long as Jones was one of those guys.

Definitely worth your time! And yet, this movie scans like large chunks of the exposition and police procedural have been edited out. Or never shot at all.

Voice-overs move us from one spot in the timeline to the next, with only the pickup moving us along. Strange, and not that effective.

Or not. But the narrative is disjointed and for once, the voice-over is necessary to keep us up with the missing exposition.

The plot is pretty straightforward southern gothic, missing girls turning up dead, body in the bayou, sinister powerful men with accents.

Nothing not seen before. What does set this picture apart is the appearance of a dead Confederate general. I do not get the point of it.

The book must explain it better. Or do the Confederate dead really walk the swamps? And if so, why appear to Tommy Lee Jones?

And would the honorable General approve of Tommy Lee planting evidence, beating suspects, using throw-down guns, breaking and entering, beating John Goodman?

Hard to say. I guess ends, means, justified. Deputy U. This is an odd movie, and not a very successful one.

The plot makes little sense, or maybe that parts left out would make it more believable. Like, ballistics? So why go to all the trouble instead of just disappearing the informant?

Ditto shooting a cop from ambush. How much more attention can any perp draw to himself than shooting at the police?

Every law enforcement in Louisiana would converge on the parish and not stop until Murphy Doucet was alligator chow.

Goodman is kind of disappointing, a rote performance of a sleazy degenerate that he could do in his sleep.

Of whatever.

Fuentes schreef : Prachtige beelden, mooie soundtrack. Verder een oninteressant misdaadverhaaltje. Vandaag gekeken, had achteraf pas door toen ik mijn stem hier zag dat ik hem 3 jaar geleden al eens had gezien Deze film lijkt mij eerder een neo-western in de stijl van No Country for old men die zich afspeelt in Louisiana, met ook aandacht voor de plaatselijke Cajun en zydego muziek.
