This is like a piece of someone's life - straight from the cerebral cortex". He lets him have a taste, and we see the mark's face as he turns soft and narcissistic; he thinks he's a teenage girl having a shower.

Then Lenny points out a couple dancing on the other side of the room. How'd you like to have a hot girlfriend like that?

How'd you like to be her? Director Kathryn Bigelow " Blue Steel " and her designers and special-effects artists create the vision of a city spinning out of control.

Cinematographer Matthew F. Leonetti's point-of-view shots are virtuosic especially one in which a character falls from a roof in an apparently uninterrupted take.

The pacing is relentless, and the editing, by Howard Smith , creates an urgency and desperation. Working from a screenplay by Jay Cocks and James Cameron director of the "Terminator" films , Bigelow turns scenes like this into a critique of the central paradox of virtual reality: You cannot share someone else's reality without abandoning your own.

As the "virgin brain" in the nightclub experiences the sample tape, he watches - and we watch him, defenseless and without inhibition.

Other scenes go much further, exploring more twisted horrors. In one, which is disturbing and graphic, a man attacks a female victim after first forcing her to wear the headpiece - so that she experiences her own death through his eyes.

It's revealing, how a scene like that seems so much more sad and distressing than the more graphic scenes of violence we see all the time in the movies: Bigelow is able to exploit the idea of what is happening; she forces her audience to deal with the screen reality, instead of allowing us to process it as routine "action.

Although Jeriko One's murder has pushed the city into anarchy, Lenny Nero's priorities are private. He wants to raise some money, maybe because that will increase his stature in Faith's eyes.

Nero gains a companion for his quest: Mace Angela Bassett , who drives an armored limo, and met Lenny when her husband was murdered.

He was the cop who comforted her kids. She sees through his scam-artist's facade and saves his skin.

It creates a convincing future landscape; it populates it with a hero who comes out of the noir tradition and is flawed and complex rather than simply heroic, and it provides a vocabulary.

Look for "tapehead," "jacking in" and the movie's spin on "playback" to appear in the vernacular. At the same time, depending more on mood and character than logic, the movie backs into an ending that is completely implausible.

Translate review to English.

Absolut sehenswert!

I guess there may be different versions of this DVD available, because the one I got does not have the limitations listed on Amazon's site and in some of the comments here.

It is in 2. The picture is not distorted either; it looks like any other film I would play.

Amazon lists the film as being in 1. Amazon also says the disk is Region 2, and will not play on players sold in the U. There is a symbol on the disk case, oblong, a small world map, with the number "2" over it.

But the disk plays both on my computer and in my Blu-ray player without any issue. Usually my disk player will spit out any disk that isn't Region 1 I do NOT have a region-free player.

Usually my computer asks if I want to change the Region Code on my disk player if I put a non-Region 1 disk in it. Neither happened in this case.

Both play the disk perfectly I can only assume the disk is actually Region 0, meaning it is universal. The disk is definitely not made in the U.

The logo for the rating which is 18 and above is also not what one would see on a U. So, did I get lucky?

Are there different versions of the disk available? I don't know. By the way, there are 3 different DVDs listed for sale here as I write this, each with different covers.

The one I got is the first one, with 3 people's heads on the cover, placed vertically, and the title on the bottom right As for the film itself, I cannot rate it at this time, since I haven't watched it yet.

When I do, I will come back and edit my review. But I thought it was worth mentioning the points I made now, for people to ponder.

Letterboxed - i. Both my TV and disc player can "stretch" it, but image quality suffers. Kathryn Bigalow is fun to watch - I'm glad she defined her own voice more distinctly in The Hurt Locker, but Strange Days is a great example of what James Cameron's style looks like when it's combined with someone else.

It's got Cameron written all over it: a strong female lead, inventive action sequences, the threat of technology, the redemptive power of love - everything except his increasingly first-draft dialog, actually.

The story is set in the future where memories are recorded and shared illegally - people are hooked on experiencing each other's lives, with some of the less kosher experiences being traded like drugs.

The film opens with a minute point-of-view sequence cleverly designed to look like one shot of a robbery than ends in the death of the person recording the experience, so it provides the thrill of the hold-up with an element of snuff.

It's a highly effective way to introduce the topic. I lived in the UK when I saw this in and what prevented the movie from being a blockbuster hit was the rape sequence.

It's actually essential to the telling of the story but wow did audiences run away in droves. But nevertheless it derailed the movie back then and I remember people walking out of the theater at the time.

In the history of film, it will stand as a great example - maybe the only example - of James Cameron collaborating fully with someone else.

It's clearly a production of two people and is much stronger than if either had created it individually. The subplots are more complicated than some of Cameron's other films and the cinematography and action are better than many of Bigelow's movies.

Totally underrated film though. I was stunned when it came into cinemas back in the days and I still am. Remembering the millennium, I remember this movie.

As stated above, this Blu Ray will not operate in the US. Be mindful of this when you purchase. Love this film, but this DVD feels like a bootleg.

The aspect ratio is bizarre, leaving it framed in the center of the screen with huge black bands on all four sides. The captions still appear at the bottom, so when we adjust the AR on the TV to view the film normally, the caption are way off the bottom.
